What to Eat on GLP-1 Medication When You Have No Appetite
The food noise is gone — and so is the desire to eat anything at all. Here is how to make the little you do eat count.
People often describe the same surprise on GLP-1 medication: the constant background chatter about food simply stops. For many that is a relief after years of fighting it. But it brings a new problem — when nothing appeals, eating becomes an administrative task, and the easiest thing to reach for is rarely the thing your body needs.
This article is general nutrition information, not medical advice. It does not replace guidance from your doctor or a registered dietitian, who know your history and your medication.
Change the question you are asking
Before the medication, the useful question was usually how do I eat less. Now it is closer to how do I make three or four small meals carry everything I need. That is a different problem, and most standard diet advice does not address it at all.
Density beats volume
If you can eat roughly half of what you used to, then each bite has to do roughly twice the work. In practice this means favouring foods where protein and nutrients are concentrated rather than diluted.
For the days when nothing appeals
Nausea and general food aversion are common, particularly in the days after a dose increase. On those days, ambition is counterproductive. The goal is not a perfect meal — it is getting some protein and fluid in without a fight.
- Cold or room-temperature food often smells less strongly than hot food, which helps when smell is the trigger.
- Simple, bland and familiar tends to work better than anything rich or complicated.
- Liquids can be easier than solids: a yogurt drink, a shake, a blended soup.
- Small and frequent beats large and occasional when your stomach is unsettled.
- Sipping fluid between meals rather than during them leaves more room for food.
Persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain or being unable to keep fluids down are not things to manage with meal planning. Contact your doctor.
Why planning matters more now than before
When you were hungry, you would find something to eat regardless of whether a plan existed. Without hunger driving you, meals get skipped by default — not by decision. Having the week already decided, with the right food in the house, removes the moment where nothing gets chosen.
